Online Loans in Corpus Christi: the Licence Question Comes First

Online loans in Corpus Christi raise one question before any other, and it is not the rate. A business making consumer loans into Texas must be licensed here, wherever it happens to sit. Every protection described elsewhere on this site is enforceable against a licensed business and against nobody else.

Quick answer: Any lender or credit access business making loans into Texas must be licensed by the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner. Check that first, then read what the recurring-debit authorisation actually permits.

Distance does not change the licence

The common assumption is that an online business operates under the rules of wherever it is based. It does not. Lending into Texas requires a Texas licence, and the state’s rules travel with the borrower rather than with the company’s address.

Texas credit access businesses are licensed by the Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner, must post a fee schedule, and must give you written disclosures before you sign. A business with a physical location in Corpus Christi must additionally hold a City certificate of registration — the ordinance requires one for each physically separate location and provides for its display and presentment on request.

The reverse is worth saying too, because the channel gets a worse reputation than it deserves. Plenty of licensed businesses operate online and are bound by exactly the same rules as a storefront across town. Being online is not the warning sign. Being unlicensed is.

What to search, and what a refusal tells you

Search the legal entity name, not the brand. Websites routinely trade under something other than the licensed company, so find the legal name in the footer or the terms and check that.

If a site will not tell you which entity is behind it, treat that as the answer to the question you were about to research.

Two patterns deserve particular attention. A site describing itself as connecting you with lenders is a matching service, not a lender — ask who will actually hold the loan before you sign, not before you apply. And a site invoking tribal sovereignty to explain why state limits do not reach it is making a claim that has been litigated, and one you should read about before borrowing rather than after.

What the recurring-debit authorisation gives away

This is the part of an online loan that differs most from a counter, and almost nobody reads it.

Funding and repayment run through your bank account, which means you sign an authorisation for recurring electronic debits. That is normal and it is how the loan works. What matters is knowing three things before agreeing.

  • What is authorised. The amount, the dates, and whether the business may retry a failed debit — repeated retries are how one short account becomes several bank charges.
  • How to revoke it. Revocation is a conversation with the business and, separately, with your bank. Doing only one of the two is the usual reason debits keep arriving.
  • That revoking does not cancel the debt. It stops a collection method, not the obligation.

If debits are taken that you did not authorise, or after you revoked, that is a conversation with your bank about a stop payment as well as a complaint to the OCCC.

The city rules still apply to the loan

Whatever the channel, the substance of a Corpus Christi payday loan is governed by the same limits.

The cash advanced may not exceed 20% of your gross monthly income, and the business must establish that income from a paycheck or other documentation rather than take your word for it. An online form that sets your limit from a number you typed, with nothing to support it, has skipped a step the ordinance requires.

Instalment arrangements may run no more than four payments, each retiring at least 25% of the principal, and may not be refinanced. Lump-sum loans may be renewed no more than three times, and a new loan within seven days of paying one off counts as a renewal.

Your agreement must also be written in your language of preference, and the business must provide a referral to nonprofit credit counselling.

What you gain, and what you give up

The online channel is genuinely better at some things and genuinely worse at others.

It is faster to compare, it runs outside business hours, and pre-qualification with a soft inquiry is more common than at a counter — so you can see likely terms without marking your file. For somebody working shifts around the port, applying at nine in the evening is not a small advantage.

What you give up is the ability to walk back in. A storefront has a person and an address; a website has a support queue. If a debit is taken twice, or a payoff figure does not match, or a document you were promised never arrives, the difficulty is not the law — it is reaching somebody.

Which is an argument for keeping your own record from the start: save the agreement, screenshot the offer page, note the date of every debit. A complaint with attachments is worth several without them, and the attachments are far easier to collect before you need them.

A short pre-application checklist

Five items, none longer than a minute.

Find the legal entity name. Check it against the OCCC’s licensing records. Confirm whether the site is the lender or a matching service. Read the recurring-debit authorisation, particularly the retry terms. And check the offer against your own 20% figure before accepting it.

Then the rule that does not change with the channel: never send money to receive a loan. A genuine business takes its charges out of the loan. Any demand for an upfront fee — especially by gift card, wire or payment app — is advance-fee fraud rather than a product.

And if an offer arrives with a deadline attached, that deadline is the product being sold, not the loan. A licensed business quotes the same terms tomorrow.
