Corpus Christi shift worker loans run into a problem that salaried borrowing does not. Along the port and the refinery corridor, income arrives in waves — heavy overtime through a turnaround, thin weeks after it — and both the amount you are offered and the date you are asked to repay get set from whichever week the paperwork happened to capture.
Quick answer: The city caps the cash advanced at 20% of gross monthly income and the business must document that income. On swinging hours, a peak month produces a larger loan and a repayment date that a normal month cannot meet.
Why a good month is a bad basis
The City ordinance caps the cash advanced on a payday loan at 20% of your gross monthly income, and section 5-11(c) requires the business to establish that income from a paycheck or other documentation rather than take your word for it.
That is a genuine protection, and on variable hours it has an edge. The cap scales with whatever income the documentation shows — so a stub from a heavy overtime week supports a larger loan than a normal week would, and the loan is then repaid out of a normal week.
A worked example makes it concrete. Gross $4,400 in a turnaround month supports up to $880 advanced. Gross $2,600 in an ordinary month supports $520. Same person, same job, a $360 difference in what the rule permits — and the repayment lands whenever it lands.
The ordinance sets a ceiling. It does not ask which month you are actually going to repay from.
Bring the documentation that tells the truth
Since the business is required to work from documentation anyway, the question is which documentation.
Bring several months of stubs rather than the most recent one. A single stub from a turnaround overstates your normal income; a single stub from a slow week understates it. A business that has seen the pattern can size and date the loan against reality.
If you work through a contractor, or for more than one employer across a year — common along the corridor — bring evidence of each rather than the largest. Bank statements covering the swing do the same job where stubs are patchy.
Being straightforward about the variability is in your interest. Hiding it produces a repayment date you cannot meet, and the consequence of that lands on you rather than on the business.
Date the repayment, do not accept the default
This is the single most useful move available and almost nobody makes it.
Texas terms typically run from about 7 to 180 days. A fortnight is a habit, not a legal requirement. If your next reliable pay is three weeks out, ask for three weeks.
Then think about which pay it lands on. Repaying out of a turnaround cheque is manageable; repaying out of the thin cheque that follows one is where the cycle starts. If the schedule is known — and on planned maintenance work it usually is — use it.
And know the rule that catches people afterwards. A new loan taken within seven days of paying one off counts as a renewal under the City ordinance, not a fresh loan. On a lump-sum loan renewals are capped at three; on an instalment loan they are barred entirely. Rolling from one thin week into the next is exactly the pattern that clause exists to stop.
Products shaped for uneven income
Where the gap is not genuinely a short, defined one, a differently shaped product is usually cheaper and safer.
A credit union Payday Alternative Loan is capped at 28% interest inclusive of all finance charges — up to $1,000 over six months, or $2,000 over twelve under PAL II. Spreading repayment across months rather than concentrating it on one date is precisely what irregular income needs, and the payments generally report to the credit bureaus.
Membership around the Coastal Bend generally turns on where you live or work rather than on a credit score, and some credit unions admit employees of particular organisations — worth asking whether your employer or contractor is affiliated with one.
Against a Texas payday fee that no cap touches, 28% inclusive is a different category of product rather than a better deal in the same category.
The workplace channel people skip
For shift and plant work specifically, the cheapest short-term money is often attached to the job rather than to a lender.
Larger employers in this kind of operation frequently have something for a worker in trouble: a hardship or emergency assistance fund, a payroll advance policy, or an affiliation with a credit union. These are rarely advertised and almost never mentioned at induction.
Ask human resources or a benefits administrator, not a supervisor — the answers live in benefits paperwork rather than on the floor. If the site is unionised, the local is often the faster route and may have its own assistance fund.
Frame it as a question about benefits rather than a disclosure of trouble: does the company have a hardship fund or an emergency assistance programme? It costs nothing to find out, and the answer is durable.
If the hours have stopped rather than thinned
A different problem with different answers.
Check whether you are eligible for unemployment benefits — seasonal or between-contract layoff is a common reason people assume they are not, wrongly. Dial 211 for rent, utility and food assistance across Nueces County, and ask the creditor whose deadline started this whether the bill can be split.
Borrowing at an uncapped rate to cover a gap with no defined end is the one case where the product is clearly the wrong tool. The honest test before signing anything is whether you can name the date this is repaid and not replaced. If you cannot name it, the answer is not a bigger loan.
Frequently asked questions
The city caps the cash advanced at 20% of gross monthly income, and the business must establish that income from documentation. Which months the documentation covers changes the figure.
Several. One stub from a turnaround overstates your normal income and one from a slow week understates it. A business that has seen the pattern can date the loan sensibly.
You can ask. Texas terms typically run about 7 to 180 days, so a fortnight is a default rather than a requirement. Aim it at pay you can actually rely on.
Within seven days it counts as a renewal under the City ordinance, not a fresh loan. Lump-sum renewals are capped at three; instalment loans may not be renewed at all.
Often, and it is rarely advertised. Ask human resources about a hardship fund, a payroll advance policy, or a credit union affiliation.
